Like you said, there were some classics (2001: A Space Odyssey, Butch Cassidy and the Sundance Kid and To Kill A Mockingbird come to mind) but there's a lot of awkward, overripe Hollywood Studio System type of stuff that just begs for a change of pace, that would come about from the 70's indepentant directors.
