The Jager shots scene didn't have a direct narrative purpose, so I think Tarantino put it there to set up Mike as an amplification of every callous, misogynistic dude and reveal their essential wimpiness - it's jarring to see super-virile Russell reduced to tears. Remind me to lend you that Carol J. Clover book.

The more I think about it, this is a defining movie for me.

"He's getting his dick wet, sir."Andrew Bemishttps://www.blogger.com/profile/06097037829531087694noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-18377389.post-15208917824790220272007-04-13T18:27:00.000-04:002007-04-13T18:27:00.000-04:00It's okay to be wine stupid. From the moment Zoe grabbed the pipe I was almost climbing out of my seat with happiness. It was a fantastic turnaround on Stunt man Mike and the chauvinistic idea of power (hurting women, getting off on it, doing it again).

Oh yeah, I'm gonna get my dick wet.Jesshttps://www.blogger.com/profile/06083931805335278321noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-18377389.post-6801835298387889742007-04-13T00:28:00.000-04:002007-04-13T00:28:00.000-04:00to=tooIt's my birthday, so I'm wine stupid.to=too

It's my birthday, so I'm wine stupid.Andrew Bemishttps://www.blogger.com/profile/06097037829531087694noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-18377389.post-89988906271270254192007-04-13T00:27:00.000-04:002007-04-13T00:27:00.000-04:00Agreed on all counts. Because I was thinking it was a great feminist film to but felt I might be presumptuous in saying so, what with my testicles and all.Andrew Bemishttps://www.blogger.com/profile/06097037829531087694noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-18377389.post-71776884570443113292007-04-10T21:55:00.000-04:002007-04-10T21:55:00.000-04:00I loved Grindhouse. I think that the atmosphere I...I loved Grindhouse. I think that the atmosphere I saw it in really helped. I was at the Chinese Theater in LA with a packed house. I think that atmosphere would make anything awesome.

Planet Terror was the right choice to start it off with. It was thrilling, gory, and it had Rose McGowan dancing. What else could you ask for in a zombie movie? Oh yeah, a leg gun. Check! All the acting was suitably over the top and I was very impressed with Freddie Rodriguez. Tom Savini and Michael Biehn were great as the town cops (Biehn will always have a place in my heart thanks to Aliens). I loved Savini's reaction shots. He's perfectly wild.

Death Proof takes much more time with its thrills. It sets up the character dimensions that Planet Terror didn't want. I didn't read any of the reviews, so I had no idea where it was going. The languorous beginning was the perfect balance to the smash-bang ending. I think Tarantino made one of the great feminist films. From the first shot you can tell how much he loves women and cars. He carries that love of the characters through the triumphant ending. As the film goer you are rooting for the girls to do some damage to this guy. While I truly likes Planet Terror, I didn't take it home with me. Death Proof made me think about myself and why I felt like I wanted to be in that car with Tracie Thoms.Jesshttps://www.blogger.com/profile/06083931805335278321noreply@blogger.com
