We all have our personal demons.

Well, Small Soldiers isn't the subtlest form of satire, but it takes on kid-aimed marketing, the military-industrial complex and crappy kids' movies with remarkable savagery for a summer tentpole (perhaps the reason it underperformed). Jonathan Rosenbaum wrote an essay about why it's a superior movie to Saving Private Ryan (released in the same month by the same company) - I can't really agree, but it is definitely the more subversive movie.Andrew Bemishttps://www.blogger.com/profile/06097037829531087694noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-18377389.post-1520795181680552832007-11-29T18:49:00.000-05:002007-11-29T18:49:00.000-05:00know what's sad? The only cool thing about it was that it came in a cd case that could transform into optimus prime. Should I cut off contact with her? And since I have no intention of seeing it, what was so satirical about Small soldiers?Anonymousnoreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-18377389.post-62501707463704077682007-11-29T01:40:00.000-05:002007-11-29T01:40:00.000-05:00Paul: As far as the effects go, I think it has eve...Paul: As far as the effects go, I think it has everything to do with how they're shot and cut. It's a given at this point that a company like ILM can produce photoreal effects given the time and money. But when the characters are machines created by machines, it takes a real director to keep the action from becoming, as you said, ugly and incoherent.

Also, that link made me shoot Dr. Pepper out of my nose.

Allen: Sure, feel free! I'm glad we share the same vitriol on this subject.Andrew Bemishttps://www.blogger.com/profile/06097037829531087694noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-18377389.post-46641134976173882142007-11-29T00:00:00.000-05:002007-11-29T00:00:00.000-05:00May I clip this and reproduce on my blog? People actually...Bang fucking on re: Transformers. People actually like this junk? And I wasn't even that impressed with the effects, although I might have been had Bay actually held the camera on them for more than a minute. And the fight scenes, frankly, SUCK. Just incoherent and ugly to look at.

But what frightens me most is that I think Bay actually believes in the shit he's peddling. He honestly thinks he's creating the ultimate cinematic thrill ride here, just like he thought he was making the ultimate war weepie with PEARL HARBOR and the ultimate hard-R action extravaganza with BAD BOYS II. He's so hard-wired into a sell!sell!sell! mindset that everything looks like a commercial. As I said in my review of the film, "Michael Bay movies are like race cars- they're sleek and loud, and every spare inch of surface area is devoted to selling you something."

I gotta disagree on Megan Fox though. Sure, she's not very good in Transformers, but I blame the direction and the writing. I mean, I thought she was damn good in this movie.

Wait, you say that wasn't her? Because the resemblance is sort of uncanny...Paul C.https://www.blogger.com/profile/02699493473242261477noreply@blogger.com
