One of the greatest films I've ever seen. Not just anime, film as a whole. I cannot look at that at that image from the opening sequence and not think of all the weight of that film.
I'd be curious to see what thoughts you'd have to write about the film as someone who is more well versed in film as whole, as opposed to my interest in the specific type form of the medium. (Keep an eye open for when I do a post about it, and feel free to submit your own thoughts)
I'll have to tackle it someday, once I've mustered up the courage to watch it again - it's a doozy, all right. In the meantime, if you haven't come across it already, here's Ebert's article from his Great Movies series:

I just saw this film for the first time the other day. What a crushlingly sad film. Brilliant, for sure, but sad.P
