Arthur C. Clarke (1917-2008)

"Sometimes I think we're alone in the universe, and sometimes I think we're not. In either case the idea is quite staggering."

He lived so long... I thought he was gonna hold out at least until the Tamil and the Sri Lankans acheived peace and built a space elevator.
His books are generally less filmable than those of his two most comparable peers, Asimov and Heinlein, but he is responsible for one of the true greats of cinema and literature.
Corman's Nightfall and Verhoeven's Starship Troopers do not hold a candle to 2001.
I hope someone makes a creepy and stunning version of "Childhood's End" now.
