Dawn Of The Dead is easily one of the top five best horror films ever made.
Here are my picks for best horror films ever made:
1. Poltergeist (a masterpiece that looks INCREDIBLE on Blu-Ray by the way)
2. The Exorcist (as a Catholic this flick still disturbs the crap out of me)
3. Dawn Of The Dead (best horror satire ever)
4. An American Werewolf In London (my personal second favorite film of ALL TIME after Edmund Goulding's Grand Hotel)
5. The Thing (this Werewolf and The Howling have some of the best special effects I've ever seen)
Honorable mention:
Cronenberg's The Fly (although it feels more sci-fi to me than traditional horror)
One could argue Carpenter's The Thing is more sci-fi too...In which case I would change my number 5 pick to...
...Wait for it...
...Roman Polanski's Chinatown.
I know people think of it as film noir but its hard to watch the ending of the film and think of it as anything other than a "horror" film.
"At the right time and in the right place a man is capable of anything." When John Huston utters those words in context easily one of the eeriest lines ever uttered in film history.
Would love to know what everyone else on here would pick as their personal faves; especially you Bemis.
Well, the horror movies on my 100 list are The Shining, Carrie, Jaws, Alien, Nosferatu ('79), Psycho, Halloween, Dawn of the Dead, The Fly ('86), The Thing ('82), Inferno, and Invasion of the Body Snatchers ('78). In addition, the ones that always just miss the list are An American Werewolf in London, Suspiria and Creepshow. Love all the movies you've mentioned - non-traditional horror that still freaks me out would include Polanski's Macbeth and Safe. Poltergeist scared the bejesus out of me as a tot, so I'll have to add the Blu-Ray to my queue.
